Libya:
The global precedent
Even though we secretly hoped that diplomacy will be victorious, with every day that passed, it became apparent that a military operation is inevitable. Security Council resolution UN 1973 justified the anticipated military operation in Libya and marked a precedent in modern political history. This is the first time the international community united around the protection of human rights; this is the first military operation, which perpetrator was not the United States of America but France; and by far the most staggering of all is the support of the Arab League.
Indeed the latter opposed the air strikes but their support for the no-fly zone is still significant. It is arguable why they are opposing now, and supporting earlier but what is valid is the fact that for the first time the world united and ruled together. Was it because the ghosts of conflicts passed are lurking still? Or perhaps the West is trying to establish a better 'face' in the Middle East? It will be known in the coming months….
The conflict in Libya has been interesting one from the onset. Gaddafi is the longest ruling dictator who has managed to manipulate his people and the world magnificently in the last decade. He used the Bulgarian medics as bait for the West to provide him with humanitarian aid, end of the embargo, and to open the doors to investments. Col. Gaddafi is an eccentric dictator and a great manipulator who won't cease power. It is still too early to say how long this is to last, but it is definite that the fight won't be an easy thing.
We have seen the world change in 2011! An optimist will say it changes for the better, a pessimist will disagree but I am saying that to see the world uniting in support of human rights means a lot for the future. The military operation over Libya is an example to serve to all governments that human rights should not be disregarded and the international community won't sit aside and wait for issues to dissolve by themselves. The times of global inactivity (Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia) are long forgotten!
